Description
Old Bridge and New Bridge over the Tormes river in Ledesma, Salamanca, Spain.
Old Bridge.
The oldest remains that can be seen with the naked eye are Romanesque from the 12th century. It would be necessary to verify the data of Father Morán on the remains of Roman inscriptions at the base that testify to its disputed Roman origin. Until the 19th century it was the "highest bridge that crossed the Tormes".
It is therefore a high-rise bridge whose current construction dates from the mid-third third of the 15th century, possibly from the time of Beltrán de la Cueva. From that time only two pointed arches are preserved of the five that the construction has, since the two of the ends are the product of the reform of Martín de Sarasola at the end of the 16th century and the second arch leaving the Villa is the work of 1816, because in 1812 it was dynamited by Napoleonic troops. From 1462 to 1909, the pontazgo right had to be paid to the Count of Ledesma for each person who crossed this bridge. It is at that time that the city council acquired ownership of the bridge and the tower that was at the beginning of it was demolished and that was used for the pontazgo tax.
New Bridge.
Located next to the medieval bridge and built in full urban expansion, it constituted a road alternative that improved access to Ledesma. For its construction it was necessary to proceed to the demolition of part of the walls.
Although already in 1934 the project was approved for its realization, the beginning of the Civil War prevented the start of the works, being years later when its construction was resumed, to finally be inaugurated on July 24, 1954. (Description from Wikipedia and turismoledesma.com)
